The Georgia Technical School Application Process

The Georgia Technical School Application Process

With 22 colleges, 88 campuses and more than 600 programs of study, the Technical College System of Georgia has become one of the most significant higher education opportunities for students of all ages across metro Atlanta. From students just starting to work towards their vocational goals to employees who want to advance their careers, technical colleges offer something for everyone. And with both the affordable nature and flexibility of a technical education, students are flocking to these institutions. But what does it take to get into a technical school? KNOWAtlanta turned to Chattahoochee Technical College, the State of Georgia’s largest technical college that serves more than 10,000 students annually, to learn more about the application process and what people can expect from the experience. Here, Chatt Tech’s Missy Cusack, vice president of student affairs, shares her insights about applying to a technical college and how to navigate the process successfully.

Does applying to a technical college differ from applying to a four-year college or university?

They are very similar. The application for each technical college can be found on their college website, most likely on their admissions page, which is very similar to our four-year college partners. Once a student completes the application, they will pay the application fee. Application fees vary, but often the fees may be less at a technical college.

What should potential students expect regarding how long the application process will take?

That really depends on the student and how quickly they submit required documents like high school transcripts or previously attended college transcripts. At Chatt Tech, we can admit a student in two business days if all required documents are received. However, during peak times, very close to our deadlines, it can take longer due to volume.

What are some of your key admissions requirements?

Our admissions requirements are very minimal. We need the completed application, the application fee and transcripts.

Are applications accepted year-round? How does the academic schedule work?

Yes, applications are accepted year-round. We are on a traditional semester schedule, with fall classes beginning in mid-August and spring classes in early January. Summer classes begin in late May or early June. Applicants are highly encouraged to apply two months prior to the start of their selected term. This allows for plenty of time to complete the admissions process, apply for financial aid, complete the new student orientation, receive academic advisement, get registered for classes and meet tuition and fee payment deadlines.

What kinds of admissions services do you offer to help students select the right programs and courses?

Our admissions counselors can often help students with program selection by answering questions and providing information about our programs of study. Applicants can also make appointments with our career development professionals for more in-depth discussions. We also offer applicants the opportunity to complete YouScience, an interest and aptitude test, that can be helpful in the career exploration process.

Do you offer admissions information sessions?

Yes, we offer information sessions, campus tours and other special events like open houses and senior nights. Also, each applicant is assigned an admissions counselor based on the first letter of their last name. These staff members are focused on helping each applicant move through the admissions process. Applicants can learn more about information sessions, tours, events, deadlines and counselor contact information.

What should people know most about applying to and enrolling in a technical college?

Applying is easy. Obtaining the education and training you need is possible and affordable. Also, don’t assume you know all the programs that schools like Chatt Tech offer. I think many people are shocked when they see our Interiors program, our Film and Video Production program, our Occupational Therapy Assisting program and more. Our students go on to be happy, successful and fulfilled professionals.

What should people know about Chatt Tech?

We aren’t the old-fashioned tech school many people think. We offer options! We can train someone to become a skilled professional in two years or less with little to no debt upon graduation, or we can be the starting point for a bachelor’s degree. Chatt Tech now has a fabulous partnership with Kennesaw State University for students. More information is available at chattahoocheetech.edu/link-ksu/.
