Outdoor Luxury Is An Atlanta Specialty

By Mary Booth Thomas

The Atlanta area’s mild climate makes outdoor living possible almost every day of the year. Homeowners in upscale neighborhoods are taking advantage of the situation and creating outdoor entertainment spaces that are as luxurious and beautiful as the interiors of their homes.

Picture a huge gazebo made of stacked stone or brick, with an intricate custom stone floor, a fully equipped outdoor kitchen built into a brick or stone wall, custom mahogany weatherproof cabinets, a refrigerator, dishwasher and sink, a bar with a wine cooler and ice maker and a living area with a stacked stone fireplace, an outdoor theater with a projector, retractable screen and surround sound speakers.

In the background, there’s an infinity edge pool with a waterfall cascading over boulders and an adjacent bubbling hot tub with elaborate stone decking and lush landscaping surrounding it all. When the sun goes down, soft lighting comes on, illuminating the trees, the waterfall and the ferns that surround it.

It’s like being in a luxury resort with all the comforts and conveniences of home. “The outdoors is now an extension of indoor living spaces in the home. It’s not heated and cooled space, but it’s definitely livable space,” says Margaret Gruber, sales agent at Vickery, Hedgewood Properties’ planned community in Forsyth County.
